We played a rearranged fixture against Trinity Old Mid Whits, on a very grey and dismal morning, at a time which was so early that it was still dark when we got there. However we were pretty bright and started off very positively, making a few chances early on and generally running the game for the first ten minutes or so, but OMWs came back strongly and played some neat hockey, but without really creating any chances. I don’t really remember much of this period as I was umpiring, so didn’t see much of the game….
We struggled a bit to hold on to the ball, but then a change of umpire brought us back into the game – I think I confused the defence with lack of ability and we scored a few to make it 3 – 0 at half time.
The crowd was starting to get behind us after this, on one side an old bloke on crutches – nice to see Breesey again, and on the other side some ladies from Kenly and Oxted. Although OMWs had been fighting hard, and creating a few breakaways and short corners, their inability to score was wearing them down, and we started to take control of the game. At this point Carlos sent the crowd wild (well the girls anyway – Chris was too busy talking to himself) by scoring a spectacular goal, running at least half the length of the pitch and calmly slotting past the keeper, which all of the crowd, our team and half the oppo applauded.
We scored a few more, including one from Nick who was not so much goal hanging as camped in the D, though he could have had a hat trick… Other goals from Oli, Ross – who had an excellent game to be MotM on his debut, Macca, Carlos again completed a good performance against an OMWs side who were no pushover, and the defence had to play well to keep the clean sheet. Another mention to Carlos whose team selection this week meant that he had to give his inspirational team talk in Australian, South African, Scottish, Peruvian and Welsh, and still didn’t manage to make much sense…
