We came to Saturday’s match looking to achieve our second win of the season with one of our strongest teams with great team support! Within the first 5 minutes of the match, we scored the opening goal through a well worked team effort up the right hand side of the pitch, catching Reigate off guard. Soon the match settled down and we were on the back foot. We defended really well, doing what was asked of us in the pre-match team talk of defending form the front. Georgia did some fantastic tracking back, creating an effective counter attack with Cat and Bethan on the left side. Unfortunately, Reigate converted 2 goals before half time, one from open play and the other from a short corner.
After our half time talk, where we spoke about using the space, keeping our shape, quicker balls and utilising the speed and skills of our midfields and forwards against their defence. We were able to create an effective counter attack from the defence by using the space created by the partnership of Hannah and Claude up front, who worked very well off each other. Laura provided that effective central midfield player, pivoting and shifting the ball from one side to the other. Sarah and Laura were both very effective at marking and hassling one of the key Reigate players as well as working the ball around her. With a change of team formation by the coach, we became a more attacking team which proved to be very effective. In the last minute of play we capitalised on our play – scoring 2 goals – one from an own goal by a Reigate player and the other through sheer determination and playing to the whistle.
Well done to Bethan who got M.O.M, a big thanks to Pam for umpiring and to our supporters for coming! I think everyone came away from the match with a big grin on their faces as we knew that we deserved that win. Let’s keep this momentum going into the next match and apply it to our training sessions to capitalise on this momentum.
