Surrey Spartans: 1

Epsom: 4 (Midmer 3, Hebden)

Epsom returned to action after the winter break with a trip to Surrey Spartans in Round 2 of the Surrey Cup.

Spartans started much stronger but Epsom held out and took the lead on 10 minutes when Sean Hebden’s right wing cross found James Midmer to fire home. Soon after, some neat interplay between Scott Barton and Dave Fletcher enabled Midmer to fire home from a narrow angle for 2-0. The quick-fire double seemed to spook Spartans and Epsom controlled the rest of the half, creating several further chances. Some great saves from Spartans’ keeper kept it to 2-0 and just before half-time Spartans scored a well worked goal for 2-1, keeping the tie firmly alive.

The second half saw Epsom start nicely and they soon took a 3-1 lead when Hebden broke clear down the centre and played in Midmer for his hat-trick. Midmer then returned the favour with a long ball from midfield finding Hebden at the top of the circle, who turned his marker twice before smashing home a fine finish for 4-1. This was effectively game over as Epsom tightened up and played out the remainder of the game with few alarms. Hebden, Fletcher, Barton and Josh Glasford all went close from neat counterattacks but it stayed 4-1 to Epsom, who will now take on Woking 2s in the quarter-final at Woking.
