Men’s 1s: lose out to Wanderers

Epsom: 1 (Pizzey)

Wanderers: 4

Epsom lost 4-1 at home to Wanderers to slip to sixth in the Surrey / Hampshire league table. Shorn of several players in the build-up, Epsom started with a defensive formation which did not see them at their best. Wanderers controlled first-half possession and took a 1-0 lead from a penalty stroke on 20 minutes. Soon after, Epsom gave the ball away twice at the back in quick succession and were punished with two clinical finishes to go in 3-0 down at half time.

Following a tactical rethink Epsom emerged much stronger in the second half and Alex Pizzey cut the deficit to 3-1 with a neat finish. Following this Epsom started to control possession and they spent a good 20 minutes camped in the Wanderers half but just couldn’t break through again. Several Epsom short-corners came and went and Wanderers’ keeper made some good saves when called upon. With 5 minutes to go a by-now rare Wanderers attack yielded a short corner which found its way in via an improvised routine for 4-1. Epsom will hope to regroup and find some form ahead of their next fixture away at Barnes.
