IMG_1928Two goals from livewire forward Steve Turnbull helped Epsom to a 4-0 win at home to Wanderers on Saturday. This was a must-win game for Epsom who had sunk to 11th in the league following a run of close defeats, but they welcomed back forwards Scott Barton (from long-term injury) and James Midmer (back from New Zealand) and there was a positive feel around Therfield School. The early stages were all Epsom and after 5 minutes Midmer jinked down the right baseline and cut-back for Turnbull to score from close-range. Soon after, Epsom won a short corner and a neatly-worked routine was deflected home by George Jameson for 2-0. Epsom were firmly on top in the first 20 minutes but missed several chances and there were a few nerves swirling around as Wanderers came back into the game in the run-up before half-time. However, just seconds before the interval a long ball found Turnbull in behind the defence and he spun the keeper and smashed home for 3-0. This goal swung the momentum firmly with Epsom who dominated the second half. Mike Atkinson was a constant threat and, following a number of chances, Paul Atkinson made it 4-0 on 60 minutes from close-range. Skipper Ed Burton-Brown made a fine stop right on full time to keep a clean sheet. Epsom next travel to Barnes for another big game.
