After I dodged a bullet this week after what happened in the first ten minutes, I thought I would take one for the team and write a quick report myself.
Firstly, well played one and all. We were first to those 50/50 balls and everyone competed and scrapped for everything today.
Thanks Carlos for the team formation you sent to me, unfortunately you had included Dave E, who was unavailable this week and did not turn up. After some shuffling around we took to the field in the usual winter downpour.
We made a confident start distributing the ball around nicely and setting up some great chances.
The first chance came after a run down the right hand side by Adam, and a cross through the D, to find Grant who finished with confidence in his usual position at the back post!
Then came my unfortunate experience in the match, where I made a run from midfield through to the edge of the D, passed to Daniel, who I thought would shoot, but he returned it to me, where at full stretch I missed the open goal and ended up in a heap on the floor. The lesson learned here is leave the forwards to do the scoring! Somehow I avoided TFC.
The reason why came a few moments later, when after some continued pressure, we were awarded two short corners. Both of these were taken by Breesey, but both shots were closer to taking Adam and Oli’s heads off who were running in from the right, than scoring the goal!
All joking aside, Breesey did make up for it with some well timed tackles in defence, before playing 10 minutes in a free role, that saw him pop up in the centre of midfield, on the right wing, and up front!
Two more well worked goals were scored by Darron, one of which I think was a well taken reverse sweep. 3-0 at half time.
In the second half, Surbiton definitely tried everything to get back in the game, but our defence held solid, even amongst some handbag moments where heated discussions took place over positional play!
We probably saved our best goals for the second half. The first was scored by Daniel after I had hit the ball into the D, where he turned and hit a reverse sweep into the back board. The second was a sweetly hit goal by Adam, the best goal I think he has scored for Epsom.
Overall guys, a great team performance with everyone playing an important part in the win.
