Mustangs, in 2nd place in their league and looking to secure promotion travelled to 3rd place Cheam Hunters on Saturday. Victory would mean that Cheam would not be able to catch us on points and also open the door for EHC 5s to close in on the possible final promotion place of 3rd spot. Hence the presence of the 5th XI captain.
It was a lovely sunny morning and Mustangs started the brightest and applied constant pressure to Cheam and controlled most of the game in the Cheam half of the pitch. All the pressure turned to goals with the team taking a comfortable 3 nil lead into half time. Goals from Liam White, David Orr and Alex Scott.
The second half didn’t start so well and the Mustangs were sloppy in possession and Cheam pulled one back just 4 minutes after the restart. However, this didn’t stop the Mustangs stepping up the pace again and the goals started to flow with Adam Kerven finally getting on the score sheet with 2 goals from open play and joined on the score sheet by brother Dan and then the surprise of the day Graham Cox turned up from left defence in front of the Cheam goal and swept the ball into the net! How did he get there? What was he doing there? Still the stats speak for themselves, one venture into oppo D all season, one shot at goal and one goal!
A 7 v 1 victory away to the 3rd place side and a healthy score line for the league goal difference column. The Mustangs last league game is at home to Addiscombe this week and a draw or win guarantees 2nd spot. Our closest rivals for 2nd spot now is EHC 5s who can equal our current points total and need to slot in the goals to close the goal difference gap.
